Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, has opened up about the personal hardships that motivated his music career. In a candid interview with Capital Xtra London, Rema revealed that his mother’s financial struggles were a driving force behind his ambition.
Rema recounted how his mother faced daily challenges, including being unable to afford basic transportation. This situation deeply impacted him and fueled his resolve to succeed in the music industry. His commitment to improving his mother’s life became a primary goal.
“I couldn’t stand seeing my mum struggling every day, unable to afford even a bus fare or bike ride,” Rema shared. “I knew I had to make it big, and fast.”

Once he began earning from his music, Rema prioritized buying a car for his mother. “The moment I started making money, I bought her a car. Instead of getting a car for myself first, I made sure she had one. We celebrated together, and I was so proud to be able to do that for her.”
Rema credited his mother’s unwavering support and prayers as crucial elements of his success. “She’s an incredible mum and the reason behind my success. Her prayers and support mean everything to me,” he said.
