Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has been released from prison after serving 13 years. The Court of Appeal overturned his 2014 murder conviction, bringing an end to a high-profile case that has captivated the Caribbean music scene for over a decade.

Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, was initially sentenced to life imprisonment along with co-defendants Shawn ‘Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. The trial, which lasted 64 days, was the longest in Jamaica’s history. Despite consistently proclaiming their innocence, the four men were found guilty and received life sentences.

The appeal process, which reached the Privy Council in London, highlighted critical issues, including allegations that a juror attempted to bribe others. This significant procedural error was central to the case, leading the Privy Council to remit the matter to the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal, in a unanimous decision, determined that justice did not necessitate a new trial and thus acquitted Kartel and his co-accused.

Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop announced the ruling, which has been welcomed by Kartel’s fans and supporters worldwide. Kartel, a pivotal figure in dancehall music, has collaborated with global superstars such as Rihanna and Jay-Z. His influence and popularity persisted even during his incarceration, with numerous releases and collaborations.

The acquittal marks a significant moment in Jamaica’s legal and cultural history, as Kartel’s case has been a subject of intense public interest and debate. His release is expected to have a substantial impact on the music industry and his career going forward.
