Ghanaian musician Camidoh has come under fire after making controversial remarks about smoking, suggesting that its harmful effects may be overstated.

In a recent discussion, Camidoh questioned the blanket negativity associated with smoking, implying that its impact might be subjective and not as universally harmful as commonly believed.

Camidoh drew an analogy between smoking and the smoke exposure experienced by those who cook kenkey, a traditional Ghanaian dish. “Not everything that is portrayed as negative is negative. Generally, they say we shouldn’t smoke because it’s bad for our lungs. How about our parents who have been cooking kenkey? You see them when they are making kenkey, you see how smoky it gets? I just want to tell you, you don’t have to dwell on that…It is not bad in my eyes,” he said.

These comments have sparked significant criticism from health professionals and the public alike. Medical experts have been quick to refute Camidoh’s claims, reiterating that smoking poses serious health risks. Smoking is well-documented to cause a myriad of health issues, including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory problems.

Additionally, experts highlighted the severe effects of smoking on eye health. Smoking increases the risk of several eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, dry eye syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, Graves’ ophthalmopathy, and optic nerve damage. These conditions can lead to vision problems and, in some cases, complete vision loss.

Public health advocates have urged Camidoh to reconsider his stance and use his platform to promote healthier lifestyles. They stress that misinformation about smoking can be dangerous, especially when spread by influential figures. The debate underscores the ongoing need for public education on the dangers of smoking and the importance of relying on scientific evidence in health matters.
