Nigerian Afrobeats star Omah Lay has voiced his frustration over the increasing trend of upcoming artists in the genre, both within Nigeria and globally, imitating his signature sound.

The “Holy Ghost” hitmaker shared his thoughts in a recent Billboard interview, where he asserted that his innovative approach to Afrobeats has inspired a wave of copycats.

“The new artists emerging from Nigeria and across the Afrobeats scene are borrowing elements from what I started. Everyone is trying to replicate something I introduced,” Omah Lay stated.

Omah Lay also expressed his satisfaction with the “Afro-Depression” label that fans have associated with his music, noting that it reflects a deep connection with his audience. “I’m thrilled that I sparked a new movement.

My music created something fresh without me having to define it. My fans did that, and it’s amazing to see how my sound has resonated worldwide,” he said.

Despite his success, Omah Lay criticized the current state of Afrobeats, accusing some artists of diluting the genre to appeal to international audiences. He lamented the rise of Amapiano in Afrobeats clubs, which he feels has overshadowed traditional Afrobeats music.

“The leaders in the genre are watering it down for the money. I can’t even recall the last time I heard a true Afrobeats track in a club; it’s all Amapiano now,” he remarked.
