Accra, Ghana – Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for the release of 53 Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested during a demonstration against illegal mining activities in Ghana.
In a series of social media posts, the musician condemned the police’s actions as a “blatant punitive measure” and expressed concern over the lack of bail for the detained protesters.
M.anifest, known for his outspoken views on social and political issues, criticized the government’s handling of the protests, stating that it is “alarming” that individuals can be held without bail for exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
He also expressed disappointment in some Ghanaians who have supported the police’s actions, arguing that “it’s a slippery slope that could one day affect us all.”
The rapper’s comments come as several organizations have called for the release of the protesters, who were arrested on September 22, 2024, during a demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub.
The protest aimed to raise awareness about the environmental damage caused by unregulated mining.
M.anifest’s statement adds to the growing pressure on the government to release the detained protesters. The rapper’s influence and popularity are expected to further galvanize public support for their cause.
