Since parting ways with Stonebwoy’s Burniton Music Group in 2019, Ghanaian Afrobeats artist Kelvyn Boy has embraced life as an independent musician.
The “Down Flat” singer recently shared his reasons for staying unattached to any record label during an interview on Y107.9FM’s Dryve Of Your Lyfe with Kojo Manuel, offering insight into his mindset and the factors driving his career choices.
Kelvyn Boy, who left Stonebwoy’s label over five years ago, revealed that while he’s had offers from various labels, none have met his standards.
“I’ve been independent since 2019. I’ve had a few offers, but if the deal doesn’t feel right, I’m not going to jump at it,” he said. According to the artist, being selective has allowed him to protect his creative freedom and financial interests.
The singer expressed concern about the potential downsides of signing with certain record labels, noting that restrictive contracts can hinder an artist’s development. “Some labels will limit you instead of pushing you forward,” Kelvyn Boy explained.
He emphasized that, for now, remaining independent provides the freedom to navigate his career on his terms, while exploring ways to grow his brand without being tied down by contractual obligations.
His approach underscores a growing trend among artists who prioritize control and flexibility over the traditional label route. For Kelvyn Boy, independence means taking ownership of his music, career decisions, and financial gains while staying open to future partnerships that align with his vision.
Until the right opportunity comes along, the Afrobeats star is committed to thriving on his ownterms.
