Ghanaian artist Kuami Eugene has admitted that his involvement in Sarkodie’s 2020 hit song, Happy Day, has had lasting repercussions he never anticipated.
In a recent interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, the singer revealed that the song, now widely seen as a political endorsement of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has led to ongoing challenges in his career.
Eugene stated that when he was initially approached to collaborate on the track, he was unaware of any political implications.
He explained that Sarkodie’s team initially pitched the song with a different focus, and it was only after he recorded the chorus that the song took a different turn, with lyrics many interpreted as backing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP.
“I never expected the song to be seen in a political light. After recording my part, the tone seemed to shift, but by then it was too late,” he explained. “I’m still dealing with the fallout, even though I never intended to make a political statement.”
Despite his clarification, Kuami Eugene acknowledges that the song continues to shape how some people perceive him, creating challenges that persist four years after its release.
