Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer, has spoken out to put an end to the long-standing rumors of a rivalry with current Black Stars captain Andre Ayew.

“A lot has been said about a rivalry between Andre and me, but the truth is, there’s no rivalry at all,” Gyan began. “Andre is a good person, and I have genuine love for him. He has always respected me, but unfortunately, there are people who have manipulated the situation to their advantage.

They’ve brainwashed him, and that’s what’s created this so-called feud. As for me, I don’t consider myself a rival to anyone.”

The rumors of discord between the two players gained traction in 2019 when Ayew succeeded Gyan as captain of the Black Stars ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. The decision sparked speculation about animosity within the team, but Gyan has always maintained that it was a professional change and not a personal conflict.

Reflecting on his career, Gyan, who retired from international football in 2023, explained that the notion of a rivalry was fabricated by people with their own personal agendas. He further emphasized that there was never any actual issue between him and Ayew.

“It’s disheartening that some people would create these kinds of stories for their own benefit. But as for me, I’ve always put the team first. It’s not about me or Andre – it’s about the Black Stars and the success of Ghana,” Gyan said.

As one of Ghana’s most iconic players, Gyan urged the public and fans to focus on unity within the national team and avoid distractions created by false narratives. “The Black Stars should be united, and we should all focus on supporting the team to reach greater heights,” he added.

Throughout his career, Gyan has faced his fair share of challenges, including the infamous penalty miss against Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup.

Despite these setbacks, his commitment to the Black Stars has never wavered, and his latest statement reinforces his desire for unity within the team.

Gyan’s call for solidarity and cooperation within the Black Stars is a reminder of the power of teamwork and the importance of working together for the greater good of Ghanaian football.
