The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called on the government to make explicit provision in the 2025 national budget to accommodate the new conditions of service for nurses and midwives.

This follows concerns raised by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, during a press briefing on Tuesday, June 10, where he indicated that the demands presented by the GRNMA had not been captured in the 2025 budget, and implementing them in their current form could throw the government’s financial planning into disarray.

Reacting to the comments, GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, insisted that the government must take deliberate steps to allocate funds for the agreed conditions of service.

In an interview on TV3’s NewsCentral later that day, she stated,

“If the government cannot make provision for our conditions of service in the 2025 budget, it simply means it does not value the work of nurses and midwives.”

She emphasized that nurses and midwives form the backbone of the country’s healthcare delivery system and deserve better treatment and recognition through concrete budgetary support.

The GRNMA’s appeal adds to growing public discourse on the need for improved working conditions and compensation for health workers, especially in the wake of increased workloads and staffing challenges within the sector.

As budget discussions intensify, the government is under pressure to prioritize health sector needs while balancing competing demands across various ministries.
