Students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU) staged a protest on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, over rising fees, poor facilities, and alleged financial mismanagement.
The demonstration, which began as a peaceful march, turned violent when police tried to disperse the crowd. Officers used water cannons, rubber bullets, and warning shots, while some students responded by burning tyres and throwing stones. Several students and police officers were injured.
Student leaders accused management of misusing internally generated funds, withholding SRC funds and certificates, and neglecting campus infrastructure. They are demanding:
Suspension of the fee hikes until an audit is conducted
Release of withheld SRC funds and certificates
Reopening of closed satellite campuses
Better hostel and sanitation facilities
A forensic audit of university finances
Police say they acted to protect lives and property, while civic groups have called for dialogue and accountability. The Ministry of Education is being urged to step in, with students warning of further action if their demands are ignored
