Ghanaian gospel musician Brother Sammy has called on churches to do away with strict dress codes, arguing that such rules discourage people from coming to Christ. According to him, the church should be a place of acceptance, not judgment.
Sharing his experience, the “Aduro Biaa Nkadem” singer revealed that a woman once turned down his invitation to church because she felt she didn’t have the “appropriate clothes” to wear. He said this moment made him realize how many people are kept away from church by fear of being judged.
“Many people have stopped attending church because of how they were treated for their looks — whether they had dreadlocks, tattoos, or wore something considered inappropriate,” he said. “But those are the very people who need to hear the Word of God.”
Brother Sammy explained that his personal sense of style is not about vanity but a way to show that being a Christian does not mean neglecting one’s appearance.
“That’s why I love to dress well. I want to show that Christianity can look good. You can love God and still look fashionable,” he noted. “No matter your style, Christ loves you and welcomes you.”
He emphasized that the focus of the church should be on winning souls, not policing appearances, encouraging believers to use every aspect of their lives — including fashion — as a way to reflect God’s love.
