Veteran Ghanaian rapper and singer D Cryme has revealed that despite the rise of social media fame in today’s music industry, many of the country’s most-followed artistes still show him deep respect and admiration.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM, the “Kill Me Shy” hitmaker said fans often assume rivalry between artistes of different generations, but behind the scenes, many young musicians express genuine appreciation for his contribution to Ghanaian music.

“I don’t compete with anyone. Most of the new artistes people compare me to actually come to me privately to show love and respect. The cameras are not always there, but the respect is real,” D Cryme shared.

Known in real life as Darlington Agyekum, the rapper emphasized that his following is organic and authentic, unlike the inflated social media numbers some artistes rely on today.

“Some artistes have big numbers online, but that doesn’t always translate into real fans. My followers are 100% organic — they’ve been with me from day one,” he stated.

D Cryme also reflected on his early career days, recalling how he gained international recognition long before social media became a key tool for music promotion. According to him, his songs reached audiences around the world through pure talent and word of mouth.

He cautioned fans against using social media trends as the only measure of success, noting that some artistes today struggle to maintain relevance despite having all the digital tools available.

“Back then, we didn’t have TikTok or Instagram, but our music lived on. It still does. So it’s unfair to compare generations because the systems are completely different,” he said.

D Cryme’s message resonates as a reminder that authenticity, consistency, and legacy will always stand the test of time, no matter how much the music industry evolves.
