The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) is set to launch a renewed decongestion operation in the Central Business District (CBD) following the collapse of the first attempt to clear traders from unauthorized trading spots.

The initial exercise, led by Metropolitan Chief Executive Alhaji Abubakari Adam Takoro, briefly cleared the streets, but within days traders returned to occupy walkways, bicycle lanes, and roadside spaces that were supposed to be kept free.

In a candid admission, the Assembly’s Public Relations Officer, Amadu Mustapha Zakari, acknowledged that the first phase failed due to poor coordination and ineffective enforcement.

“The planning wasn’t thorough, and the task force did not perform as required,” he said. “We have taken note of the lapses and are better prepared for the second phase.”

Ahead of the new exercise, persons trading on pavements, shoulders of the road, and other restricted areas have been ordered to leave voluntarily. The Assembly has also banned weekend trading in unauthorized zones. Items found in these areas during the operation will be removed at the owners’ cost, and offenders will be sanctioned.

TaMA has called on traders and residents to support the renewed effort, stressing that the decongestion is essential for improving movement within the CBD, reducing traffic buildup, and restoring order to the bustling commercial environment.

Despite the failure of the first operation, officials maintain that the intervention is crucial to improving urban management in Tamale.
