Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has applauded members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as a clear and decisive expression of their will in the party’s flagbearer election.

Speaking after the announcement of the results, Mr Akufo-Addo praised the more than 200,000 delegates who participated in the exercise, noting that their massive turnout strengthened the party’s democratic credentials.

According to him, the outcome of the election left no room for doubt about the choice of the delegates.

“The verdict from our delegates is unmistakable. This is a moment of renewal for our party,” he stated, while congratulating Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on his victory. He urged the Vice President to lead with unity, purpose and firm decision-making as the party prepares for the 2028 general election.

Dr Bawumia emerged winner of the closely watched contest, polling 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total votes cast. His nearest challenger, businessman and Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, secured 46,554 votes (23.76 per cent), while Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, followed with 36,303 votes (18.53 per cent).

The remaining contenders, Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and former General Secretary of the party, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, obtained 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent) and 402 votes (0.21 per cent) respectively.

With this victory, Dr Bawumia becomes the NPP’s presidential candidate for the second consecutive time. He previously led the party into the 2024 election but was unsuccessful against President John Dramani Mahama.

While some political observers believe the former Vice President’s familiarity with voters gives the NPP a head start towards 2028, others argue that electoral success will depend largely on party cohesion, grassroots mobilisation and the credibility of policies presented to Ghanaians.

The January 31, 2026 flagbearer election was conducted peacefully across the country, aside from a minor disturbance reported in Ablekuma North involving the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Akua Afriyie.

As the countdown to the 2028 polls begins, attention is expected to shift to how the NPP rebuilds and re-strategises under its newly endorsed flagbearer.
