Ghanaian-American singer and songwriter, Amaarae, has shared her experience of receiving overwhelming “hatred” since returning to Ghana in 2017.
The ‘Reckless & Sweet’ hitmaker expressed in an interview with ABC News Live Prime that the backlash she has encountered stems from her boldness as a woman in a conservative society.
“I don’t think I’ve seen anyone get as much hatred from their home country as I have,” Amaarae said, pointing out how her fearless and expressive nature has made her a target. “Being a woman that is so bold and expressive, I think it shocked people and scared them.”
Amaarae believes it is time for a deeper conversation about women’s rights and societal expectations. She advocates for women to defy the constraints placed on them, encouraging them to create their own paths without the pressure to conform.
“Real conversations about the way women are viewed and allowed to express themselves need to happen,” she noted. “You can absolutely pave whatever path you want; you just have to stick to it.”
