The Government of Ghana has secured a $13 million grant from Japan to enhance electricity stability in Tamale and its surrounding communities.

The funding, equivalent to 1.92 billion Japanese Yen, was formalised through the signing of an Exchange of Notes between Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Yoshimoto Hiroshi, on Monday, March 10.

According to Minister Ablakwa, the initiative is part of broader cooperation efforts between the two countries aimed at addressing key development challenges. He described the agreement as a symbol of the strong and enduring partnership between Ghana and Japan.

“This grant will go a long way in improving the reliability of power supply in Tamale, ensuring that residents and businesses enjoy more stable electricity,” he noted in a social media post.

Frequent power fluctuations have been a major concern for residents and businesses in Tamale. The project, when completed, is expected to significantly reduce these disruptions, thereby promoting economic activities and improving the quality of life in the Northern Region.

Japan has been a consistent development ally to Ghana, contributing to critical sectors such as infrastructure, health, agriculture, and education.

Government officials say this intervention marks another step forward in ensuring equitable access to reliable energy across the country, particularly in rapidly growing urban centres like Tamale.
