Afro-Dancehall has taken center stage once again — and Ghanaian music heavyweight Stonebwoy is making sure the world remembers his role in its creation.
Following the international success of Moliy’s vibrant single “Shake It to the Max,” which has topped the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs Chart for six weeks, Stonebwoy joined in the celebration. But his congratulatory message came with a powerful reminder: he coined the term “Afro-Dancehall.”
“A name originated by @stonebwoy. Let it be etched in the books of history… AFRO-DANCEHALL ,” he posted on social media, saluting Moliy’s achievement and thanking Billboard for spotlighting the genre.

Afro-Dancehall, as Stonebwoy describes it, is a dynamic mix of African rhythms — from Afrobeats and Highlife to Amapiano — infused with the intensity and flavor of Dancehall and Reggae from Jamaica. Over the years, the genre has grown into a recognizable sound in African and global music circles, with Stonebwoy often cited as one of its front-runners.
