Ghanaian singer and media personality, Sister Derby, known in real life as Deborah Vanessa Owusu-Bonsu, has once again found herself at the center of social media controversy following a provocative statement about the institution of marriage.
The outspoken entertainer described marriage as a form of prostitution, claiming that the act of paying bride price equates to “paying for sex for life.” According to her, the traditional practice of exchanging money or gifts for a bride’s hand reflects transactional dynamics similar to sex work.
While the full context of the conversation remains unclear, Sister Derby’s comment has ignited widespread backlash, with many accusing her of disrespecting sacred cultural and religious values.

Social media users have not held back. One person remarked, “This isn’t just controversial, it’s completely disrespectful. Marriage is a holy union created by God.” Another added, “So disappointing to hear this from someone we admire. Not everything should be said for attention.”
Despite the criticism, some have defended her, arguing that she is simply voicing her personal view on societal norms. “She’s entitled to her opinion. Maybe think about the point she’s trying to raise rather than attack her,” one user commented.
This isn’t the first time Sister Derby has challenged societal expectations.
